This book is about the Castro neighborhood in San Francisco. It is the gayest neighborhood not only in San Francisco, but also on the planet. As the new kid in town, what I saw of the Castro was a fun area where people come for good food, strong drinks, and parties. However, the Castro is so much more than what I saw on the surface. I soon learned that the neighborhood is a place with a long history of activism, such as gay rights, women rights, and ACT UP movements. There were many famous heroes, who have lived and fought here, such as Harvey Milk, Cleve Jones, and Roma Guy...For that reason, I chose rainbow colors and black as a main visual language for the book. Behind the magical rainbow, there is a hidden powerful black layer which deserves to be honored and celebrated.
The content of this book is divided in different sections base on color codes. Each color represents for different chapters of the book.
The Illustrations were inspired by the history of the Castro and my observation while spending the time here. They are folded within the book as big posters, also separated as additional postcards.
For the extension of this project, I created an event by the corner of Castro and Market street to celebrate the power of our community when we are all united together. I asked people to write their hopes on the balloons with a message:
“Put your hope on the balloon and let it fly into the universe.”
